I suggest a couple of things you might do that will not interfere
with your
qualified avian vets medical procedures and make your bird more
comfortable
even if it does not work?
One...Make sure your house has enough humidity. If anything below 35
relative humidity can cause your bird to be very dry and really cause
major
problems with health, let alone it is not good for humans either. If
at all
possible bring your house up to 40 relative humidity.
The one practice I've heard to remedy low humidity and to 'help'
birds with
plucking really has worked and does just the opposite .....and that
is to
spray your bird with water daily while the birds environment is very
dry with
below 35% relative humidity. If your house is high enough with the
relative
humidity to spray your bird daily is ideal..or showers..however, if
the heat
is on and the relative humidity is low...the environment can attack
your bird
for the moisture you just sprayed on him and thus cause a even worse
condition of dry and itchy skin causing more plucking.
so, if your house is above 40 % relative humidity and you can spray
I us a
MSM spray mixture for my birds feathers and skin.....and I also put
MSM in my
birds water for them as well...however this is only when my house or
the
birds whole environment is 40% relative humidity. One has to really
watch
this with the heat on in the colder climates.
I hope this helps..

MSM helps
animals: veterinary use for pets and working animals
What are the suggested doses of MSM for animals?
For large dogs, one teaspoonful (5gm) mixed in its food for at least
2 weeks.
When a response is noted, reduce to half this amount for the next 2
weeks; if
improvement is maintained then continue on half this dose, (stepping
up again
if necessary). For small dogs or cats give half the above
amounts.
How much is safe?
There has been research into upper safe limits, all of which
indicates that
MSM is remarkably harmless even in unnaturally high doses. It is far
less
toxic than common salt for example, and ranks closer to inert
substances like
glycerine or pure water. People and animals have been taking MSM
safely for
twenty years.
Will it interfere with medications being given?
MSM is a food substance, not a medical drug, so augmenting the
amounts in
your animal's food is merely a dietary change.

Missy, First Let me qualify myself with some knowledge of what I'm
talking about with regard to the skin care of human beings. I hope this also
will qualify me to some degree with regard to the exotic birds with my
breeding over 11 years everything from the Hahns Macaw to the Hyacinthine
Macaws including some other exotic endangered Golden Conures who are known to pluck.
With many, many babies under my belt from my sold Vosmaeri Eclectus
Pairs.
I've been giving service to the human race regard to skin therapy
since 1959, with a scalpel in my hand with dermal plaining, with both oxygen and
CO2 tanks in my clinic for co2 treatments to oxygen with nebulization
Vitamins A and E emultion forte' into the epedermis for problems pertaining to
the dehydrated skin.
I to this day own the second commercial building I built in 1965 and
had up to september 1989 a on going skin clinic in my cosmetology business.
With this, I still own for the last five years a Skin Clinic as well, hair
and body establishment.
I am also with title "Comite International D"Esthetique Et De
Cosmetologie"
(CISDESCO) Candidate with a yet another 13 hour test and a 2,500
thesis on skin, massage etc....including breast augmentation, diseases etc.
I share my knowledge with friends. I'm from the Indiana area as
well, New York and Michigan to have many times over the problem of dry skin
come to our clinic in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana.
Relative humidity can be a problem inside a house, both with the air
or heat on...and I live on the island between two bodies of water.
Below is a little information regarding the MSM . Many horsemen will
be very familiar with this product.
________________________________________________________
Chemists know MSM by its full scientific name: Methyl Sulfonyl
Methane. For
the rest of us, MSM is a lot easier to say--and remember!MSM is a
compound
found in DMSO, a substance known to have helped countless individuals
suffering from a variety of ailments. Credit for identifying MSM as
the
beneficial part of DMSO goes to the well-known researcher, Dr.
Stanley Jacob
of the Oregon Health Sciences University. Dr Jacob also determined
that MSM
provides these benefits without the bothersome side-effects reported
by some
users of DMSO.MSM is a natural form of sulfur found in all living
organisms.
Small amounts of this vital organic compound are present in body
fluids and
tissues.
The good news is the missing MSM may be replaced through taking safe,
inexpensive dietary supplements. MSM as a naturally occurring
organic
compound found in body fluids and tissues, and is not known to
negatively
react with prescribed medications. (Still, when in doubt, always
consult
your pharmacist.) MSM's benefits to digestion are twofold: It
reduces
stomach acid (helping ulcers) and coats the walls of the intestinal
tract
(leading to the "flushing out" of would-be parasites.)What about
side-effects? First of all, MSM is no more toxic than water. During
the
approximately twelve hours a dosage of MSM remains in your
bloodstream, it
will contribute to the benefits described above. plus cleanse the
interior
walls of your arteries. Two reported short-term side-effects are:
(1) mild
soreness in the area(s) where tissue repair is currently taking
place: and
(2) a dull ache in the general area of the liver (at the lower edge
of the
right rib-cage.) The first short-term side-effect quickly diminishes
as
healing takes place; the second is generally experienced by
overly-enthusiastic MSM users who increase their dosage too quickly.
This
second short-term side-effect is certainly not experienced by most
MSM users,
and is easily remedied by temporarily reducing the dosage. There is ,
in fact,
only one known long-term side-effect: MSM causes hair and
fingernails to
grow faster and stronger! The naturally high percentage of MSM found
in hair
and nails is why it so positively affects these constantly
rejuvenating
cells. This should teach us something about what is required to
maintain
healthy cells in other parts of our body!

Beleive it not...my objective was or is birds..I give 750 mgs to my
bird
daily..for what ever reason in their wate size 15 oz.
I also take two 2,000. mg to one quart of water distilled water to
spray the
feathers...for any reason.
Makes their feathers beautiful and bright..
This is not a treatment to take the place of a vet or to cure a
disease/bacteria Or to take the place of a needed visit to the vet
for
sickness in plucking or toxic reaction to anything.
Also, raising the humidity is most helpful to a plucking bird.

or cat.
I have my dog, Rambo on GSE Spray which Nutribiotic now have web

it is
working where the MSM did not.

One of many reasons we have patients, foundations, incorporation's,
etc.etc..is to avoid thoughts as your implying members don't matter
when they
share....invent, discover, educate...and I disagree with you
completely in
your words that I don't matter or anyone else who has the foresight
to
explore, invent or create with making something out of nothing and
then to
share it with many others for no cost. I think Courts would disagree
with
you as well.
I started on this List the thread of MSM to make others aware of this
product
for Featherpicking..... ...This is the second time you have directed
people
to sub to other List to learn or to avoid learning something on this
List
under a thread that I have joined to share my knowledge/thoughts.
Out of the six or seven messages I see you've sent here....your
directing
members elsewhere.
I own several list, matter of a fact, I own seventeen List and yet do
not
feel any member on this list can learn any less or more being part of
someone
else's List then what they can learn or share right here on this Bird
Breeders.
I'm not advertising other list for these members to go to learn about
a
subject when Mary is here..your here and I'm here and I could make a
bet
there are other members who know more about MSM and featherplucking
to
contribute right here on this Bird Breeders. Don't you think?
I think if I was the owner of this list....I would be very upset with
your
implying members cannot learn something on this list by sending them
to other
Egroup List.
I think my sharing means a great deal now. As I'm paid 200 bucks an
hour
with all expenses paid....and it is free here, this matters a great
deal ...
that others know I'm in this business and I stay on top of matters
both as
an Aviculture Consultant and in my Profession as the owner of a skin
clinic.
Your implications say different with your remarks "Mary starting this
on the
Internet" or your dancing with words. With you being on
HolisticBird it
would have seem to me that you would have been very interested with
your
birds of a product for a skin rash that I wrote about!
Now, when I start another thread are you going to come here and send
the
members yet to another List or are you going to contribute?

Mary told of her success this PAST OCT.2000 on Holistic bird. I
happened to
give Mary Dockman all that information by email regarding her
Eclectus and
MSM when she wrote me about her Eclectus with a problem that she
continued on
to have after buying her bird from you. I also sent a blind copy to
Laurella
of ALL my messages to and from Mary, as well a couple of my other
friends as
I often do when I'm giving FREE suggestions regarding these matters.
I also happened to have Mary Dockman's message on HolisticBird where
she
tells all of my success with her bird ( not mentioning my name) in
using MSM.
( I see your here Mary, maybe you might clear this up)
In July of 1999 ONE YEAR EARLIER then when I helped Mary with he
Biaki, I'll
post the message I responded to on Holisticbird when I was on that
list I
saved every message I wrote to that list.
below you'll see I was already investigating this MSM by a
dermatologist in
my skin clinic back in JULY OF 1999
almost ONE YEAR LATER by email (Laurella has copies of all
email to
Mary) I shared this with Mary.....not to hear one word of this
working till
her post from holistic bird was forward to me this past Oct...2000 by
another
Eclectus Aviculturist who knew I put him on this formula as well, he
thought
it was funny how someone else with an Eclectus had this way or
insight very
much as my own.
In total I sent all my messages to Mary and From Mary to Laurella
and two
others in Blind copies. Yes, I do have Laurella permission to say
this on
Bird Breeders in response to your post of Mary success with MSM .
Another I helped with the same suggestions on Holistbird forward me
Mary's
message to holisticbird telling them of HER success with my
suggestions in
how and the dosage and the url's of how to use this product.
