Great idea for signature line..ID of State..
My heart goes out to you with your son and I'm understanding the loss
of your
birds, is this correct?
I surly know the joy's and the sorrow of raising a child with
problems. My
eldest is 42 years and living on his own with the help from his
brother, my
youngest son and my daughter in law. I'm very fortunate in that I
have
another son who has continued the watchful eye over my oldest and has
given
me a break now about six years.
Children with problems make us parents with a heighten awareness and
compassion for the less fortunate .....I think these children are
blessings
from God given to us for he knows we are the ones to watch over
them. In my
oldest son's lifetime, he has been very fortunate in that he has me
and his
younger brother. Now he has his father, younger brother and his
wife...to go
one when I'm no longer here. Every one of them also have been
blessed with
Mark in their midst.
At times, I thought I had tasted dirt for the many humble days I
searched of
ways to help him have a better life.
After looking back over it all after forty-two years........I am who
I am to
day because of my responsibilities that arose out of my having this
child of
special needs.
None of us get through this life unschooled by hurt in one way or
another. I
think I read somewhere 'suffering makes the heart remember'
your truly a remarkable person and I for one appreciate your sharing
and
might my words of my past life give you encouragement. Take one day
at a
time and keep the love within you alive 'because' of your burdens.
Such
passion can continue on for other interest in life for you are
familiar with
"passion" of taking care of your child.

Joyce,
Is this List for Aviculturist or animal rights members? I was under
the
impression from many top level aviculturist that breeding, hatching
and
making money is OK.
In other words here in America if we make money we should hang our
head
down?
If a vet sees a need for the welfare of our birds....we go after them
because
they marketed the pellet and made a profit?
Pellets haven't been around that long for a good judgment call as
you've made
here and I know for a fact with my 36 year old if it were not for
pellets
he'd be dead...some of my other birds I've got who were minus the
pellets
from where I bought the bird were minus in their diet and they had
lipomas,
deficient in Vitamin A to the point of blood in their slit of the
upper
beaks.

For a fact, I know some top qualified Avian Vets who say not to feed
anything except their pellets. They say feeding anything with the
pellets will limit nutritional values.
My vet does not say this...however, Harrison, and all other
veterinarians who are manufacturers of pellet foods for birds will tell you they have everything in the pellet formula for sound and good nutritional value
for your birds.
I feed only 20% of mixed people foods and of course their mixed nuts
with seed only for the cold weather. I have another concern about feeding
my birds just pellets and it has nothing to do with what has ever been
addressed... especially for a compromised bird...that is hydration.
I'll feed some kind of 'wet pellet to my birds that are compromised
or look 'hot' as the pellet does take up the moisture in their bodies to
soften and digest the pellet.
Also, when and if this happens as sometimes we can get digestive
problems I'll add some plain gator aid to the drinking water. This is my
number one concern..another is I don't feed my birds colored pellets nor do I
feed Pretty Bird either pellet or formula.
I happen to feed Zupreem non color pellets. Mikee's very favorite
is 'kaytee chunkies' which he no longer gets...
Pellets have saved two birds here at my aviary, MIkee who came to me
with a large lipoma on his breast pressing against his heart and lungs..He
came from Discovery Island and Smithsonian. He had Pseudomonas Aeruginosa in his crop an a bad liver. Susan Club examined him the day after I received him..to these findings.
He was switched to Pellets immediately here at my Aviary to give me
six years later a girl and boy Hyacinthine Macaws. His lipoma's is the size of
a ping pong ball to day and that would be gone had he been taken off his
nuts..which I just don't have the heart to do..he is 36 years of age and should
have some happiness.
He has been my feeder of my babies which he got at age three months
and has taken good care of them till weaning, first molt and sold.
All due to pellets as directed by Susan Club, staff veterinarian for
Pretty Bird.
Most pellet manufactures.(not all) are avian Veterinarians who saw
the need for our birds to be put on a balanced good diet.
I have owned my first dog since ever...my sister always got our dogs
in the family as her dog..thus, as an older woman I got my first dog, a GS
named Rambo.
Hip problems, ready to die...as a nine month old..he was trained
to 'walk me' as I relearned to walk. Today this boy is an 12 year old 'healthy'
Dog..just had his examination and my vet contributed this to my
listening to him concerning his diet, pellets or nuggets and no human food. He
looks just beautiful..you see at age six months this dog had got heart worms and
was treated and I picked him for my dog. I had to sign a waver for he
was not the dog they wanted me to have...
all pellets. Please listen to your veterinarian or the veterinarian
who sells these pellets and we had better thank God we have manufactures.
Mike was deficient in many ways and I'm sure he must have received
everything at both institutions of what they thought was a good nutritional diet.
Again, I'll give my diet so none will state that I am saying just to feed a
pellet diet for I am not.
75% pellets the rest is mixture of nuts, veggies and they get fruit
only three times a week...to avoid yeast. I live on an island with large
bodies of water on both sides of me.
I'll change this diet for compromised birds in any way...and species
as my Vosmaeri will get more veggies with a fruit 'content of liquid as
green peppers, sweet potatoes, carrots (MIkee loves this mixture) with
grapes with seeds.
Do know for a bird to pick out his favorite of any mixture you feed
it will not give the proper balanced diet they need.
another factor...Beaks were made to take the 'seed' from tree fruits
and to build nest....
If I'm going to 'treat' my birds as they should be in the wild...
what are they doing here in my living room in a cage? and ...I should put them
back into the 'wild'.
In the meantime, this Aviculturist has 'special lighting over my
birds for health'' Colortone 60 by Philips I incubate any egg of which I want to (As an Aviculturist or care taker of my birds I could care less of 'teaching my birds to 'get it right ' ) Gettting it right to me is for me to KNOW how to incubate, this is my
job..not to sacrifice any possilbe life form in an egg just to 'have my parent
birds get it right' My baby Hyacinthine Macaw that I raised is just six years old.. Her first egg/baby is alive today and enjoyed by his owner thanks to my pulling
this egg and making it my business to know how to incubate and hatch with
proper equipment for these procedures, Plust two years later and sixteen
babies under her belt alive today.
Aviculturist must learn these procedures and act accordingly with
success. Education is the key word for these procedures. Captive Breeding has
nothing to do with 'how they do it in the wild' . Captive Breeding has to do
with the Aviculturist learning to do it right.
My opinion......and of course, I'm writting a book about
these 'notations'.
We needs information for Captive Bred Birds...and how to be
responsible.
These birds are in cages in our houses, not in trees flying free.
btw, my baby I just sold for $10,000 the 'net' Aviculturist (can
you believe this one) tried to make me feel guilty for the hatchings of
these Macaws. I look at this baby, Cobalt Blue which there were three eggs
and listened to the 'net' of Aviculturist, yes Breeders...who were making
my way less then a responsible Aviculturist.
I would have lost at least sixty thousand dollars...and yes, I have a
business to run I file on my income tax...you bet I take good care of
my babies and have the big blues thanks to my managment of my Aviary.
So, if you have proper lighting
feed pellets
pull eggs
incubate and hatch eggs
feed out your babies
and have caged birds that are for the most part not using their wings.
Congratulations, in my opinion your are one hell of an Aviculturist...
and if you learn sterilization, bacteriology, microbiology and do it
with all above.........I applaud you!
..and I take it that I'm the only one here that makes money off her
business.

Missy, I don't know who does this..In my post I was mentioning an
article in
this issue of WatchBird Magazine. Scarlet Macaws by William
Horsfield page
24. William lives and has his aviary in South Africa. I found his
article
on some counts interesting and sending his eggs shells is one of his
ways of
sexing his birds I found most interesting.

Tonya,
I think a large generator is in order for you and your birds. The
cost of
three lost babies would cover the cost of a very nice generator. I
went
through this myself here in FLorida with Hurricanes visiting me on my
door
step.
Buy a large generator so your not at the mercy with weather and have
a little
more control over your aviary/nursery and babies.
I hope this helps,

I asked the question how he is with birds. My dog, Rambo was nine
months of
age when I got him. He was trained to be my walk dog to help me walk
alone.
In the meantime when he was training he became a killer of cats...and
mean
around other dogs. He'd attack a dog or cat...but not a squirrel or
a bird.
Go figure?
He is going on 12 years of age now...and still my loving dog around
my birds,
matter of a fact, he has killed two raccoons and some other critters
to save
my birds. This dog of yours might be an ideal protection dog outside
in
Florida for our critters, in fact, he may be a life saver to an
Aviculturist
who doesn't have cats..and protect the birds from raccoons or those
critters
we have problems with in our outside flights.
Please do not discount a warm climate outside avenue for this dog for
he
truly could be a wonderful protector...if he is OK with birds.
