This message and similar messages are typical tactics of animal rights
individuals who want to destroy aviculture, period.
They attack individuals and organizations who work to preserve the interest
of aviculture. They try to create dissension within the aviculture community
by turning Aviculturist against each other.
They spread lies and rummers! The truth is not in them nor are they
interested in the truth.

Hello Jessica,
I have no idea of how to get rid of fruit flies completely when we feed the
food the birds love....however, I can tell you what I do to help keep them on
the low side when feeding fruits and veggies to my birds. I use coke cans
with just a tad of coke in the bottom of the can or even a beer can with a
tad of beer left in the can. Place the cans close to the cages and yet out
of reach from the birds. The fruit flies will go inside the can and not
find their way out...also, a dark wide bottle with a narrow neck and put a
piece of fruit/orange rind in inside bottom will do help control the pests
bugs. No matter how clean one is with their birds these pest come about by
way of the store.
I also have banana trees around my place of which the fruit flies found their
way inside through the 'exhaust' fans into my birds room...like to have drove
me nuts. I've tried just about everything safe around birds to rid them to
no avail...the next visit to the supermarket and buying produce brings them
back into the house.

Elizabeth,
Have you had the test done for bird allergies by your doctor? Sometimes,
fecal from any bird can be a problem when concern with lungs, as
histoplasmosis with other lung conditions. Symptoms are the same with
coughing, mucus, etc., as though one might have an allergy. A simple test is
available for this allergy and if it comes back positive, this means any bird
would be a problem which is could be life threatening position if left
unattended by a physician.
The allergy condition can be managed by a physician with one keeping any
bird. I have a friend who overcame this allergy with a Holistic Physician/MD.
Along with dusts, fungal agents and other airborne particles created by any
petbird or breeder bird, their nest boxes and their droppings, can affect
allergies and other respiratory ailments.
I've been helped (COPD) by exhaust fans in the rooms at low level close to
the floor with fresh air brought into the rooms at waist to shoulder level
into the house either by windows which are higher level or fans. Air
conditioning does help me however, not as the exhaust fans (squirrel fans can
be bought at the home depot).
I also have six hepa air cleaners and I'll remind all they are only as good
as one keeps both filters in each unit clean.

Eastern Equine Encephalitis Eastern Equine Encephalitis is a viral disease
that attacks the central nervous system of people and horses. It is spread by
mosquitoes, which transmit the disease from infected birds. Transmission of
the disease from horse to horse or from horse to humans is highly unlikely.
The mortality rate for infected horses is 50 to 90 percent. Vaccinating
horses properly will prevent them from contracting the disease. Currently,
there is no vaccine available for people against EEE. Signs of the disease in
horses include fever, impaired vision, irregular gait, reduced reflexes,
inability to swallow, occasional convulsions and death. The disease is most
commonly detected in horses in Florida from April to August. Previously
unvaccinated horses should be given two initial injections of vaccine about 3
to 4 weeks apart. After initial vaccination, all horses should be vaccinated
three times yearly. Tips on eliminating mosquito breeding sites
Clean out eaves, troughs, buckets and gutters.
Remove old tires, or drill holes in those used for playground equipment to
allow them to drain.
Turn over or remove empty plastic pots.
Pick up broken, unused or discarded toys.
Pick up all beverage containers and cups.
Check tarps on boats or other equipment that may collect water in pockets or
indentations.
Pump out bilges on boats.
Replace water in birdbaths and pet or other animal feeding dishes at least
once a week.
Change water in the bottom of plant containers, including hanging plants, at
least once a week.
Remove vegetation or obstructions in drainage ditches that prevent the flow
of water.
Fix dripping outdoor faucets, and automatic animal water devises that create
pools of water. For additional information, contact the Florida Department of
Agriculture and Consumer Services, Division of Animal Industry at (850)

I think you expressed this very well. ...Those who are familiar with nylon

stunted while in the follicle due to stress be it 'in the brooder, diet or

Hello Byron,
Even though my heart goes out to this Umbrella and it's need of a good home,
I don't think it is a good idea for your Macaw to bring this jewel into your
home.
The respiratory of the Macaw will be put to test with the dust from the
Cockatoo. The normal flora of the two species is different and can put your
Macaw at risk.
example: has a good workup on the Cockatoo by a qualified Veterinarian been
done for that feather plucking? You don't have to answer this, just an
example.
I think sometimes a good buy or a 'rescue' might put birds in the established
healthy environment at great risk. I wouldn't do it..matter of a fact, a
Moluccan was given to me about four months ago...I called a bird entertainer
and gave the Moluccan to him and ask him to call the owner and get
acquainted.....

Your words ring out so much truth and education regarding owning both the
Macaw and the Umbrella and the difference in the Macaws and the Cockatoo's.
Pertaining to the respiratory of our Macaws and the trouble with their
respiratory they can have with the Cockatoos'.
Here is a web site

Dear Bobbie,
Have faith in your ability to help your greenwings lung condition. Exercise,
proper diet and fresh air with sunshine are miracles to help regenerate
cells. Also, I use some alternative way of life regarding herbs and holistic
medicine for my lungs and am doing very well. I also am a believer in
Chinese herbs for lungs as long as the environment is clean with exhaust
floor level and intake fresh air higher level.
I cannot explain how important exercise can play a large role in your birds
recovery and it can...build a maze out of two by fours and one by two's
pine..ladders to seven feet two or three with ropes between them...have him
go..go..and go faster till he is puffing..then play softly to 'cool' down.
You'll be delighted to see the results this will give to this young Macaw.
I had a 27 year old macaw with a lipoma as large as a grapefruit on his
breast pushing in on his lungs, heart ... after treatment for other problems
I started this with three seven foot 'tree's I built. I bolted these trees
to the 'rollers auto repair use to roll under cars.. He was all over..to day
at 36 years of age he has a thimble for that lipoma..and is a handful, active
and alive with being healthy.
Have faith in your ability and love for your macaw, your fellow aviculture
for more information and your Macaw to respond to both......
I appreciate your sharing for many others will see the problem and start
making remedies for both the Cockatoo and the Macaw.

Actually, I took the course in March of 1992 and received the Veterinarian
Care Certificate August 1992 (can be seen on my profile) with completion
finished. PIJAC took two years to send our their Certificates for all who
completed. I was one of the eleven to be first to receive our certificates
or designation and all of our Certificates are dated the same....1994 Except
my Veterinarian Care Certificate is dated August 1992.
I'm sure improvements have been made along the way as with most any program.
I think the Veterinarian Care certificate is no longer given and medical
treatment is no longer taught at this time. I was most fortunate to have had
Dr. Susan Clubb present our seminar. Our seminar was well into nine hours
and I do believe it was her second or first seminar she presented for PIJAC.

Dear All ;
Wednesday 18. July, 2001, at 20:00 - 20:30 local danish time I
expect to test the first globale online Parrot Data Chat on the
www.parrotdata.com
The aim of worldwide PARROT DATA is to collect and report data and
news about the PARROTS in the wild and aviculture, and by this I will
kindly invite you to visit the brand new PARROT DATA website :
www.parrotdata.com
We are still adjusting to the web builder, but you can allready now
register, and take part in the discussions and chats, as well as
online add links.
You are also most welcome to forward articles and news as well as add
discussions topics concerning parrots.
Best wishes, Peter

Onsdag d. 18. juli, 2001, kl. 20:00 - 20:30 lokal dansk tid
- men
i sin tid kludrede de gæve vikinger io noget så genvaldigt i det, da
de angreb og ville erobre England, slog de engelske mænd ihjel og
voldtog de engelske kvinder ... - men overtage England kunne vikingerne
ikke. Men om dette var hændt, ja, da var dansk sikkert blevet et
verdensprog ... - Men så blev det ikke - og således er PARROT DATA
www.parrotdata.com hovedsaglig på engelsk, men også med dansk som
bruger-sprog.
De bedste hilsner, Peter

learn about these adorable and rare birds.
One must be with a cfw permit to sell outside of the state as well, the

The Florida Department of Health (FDOH) has identified the first
*presumptive* human case of West Nile virus (WNV) in Florida. The
patient developed acute encephalitis in mid-July. Analysis of the
patient's serum showed a positive IgM antibody test to WNV. FDOH
expects to have results of additional laboratory tests later this
week. The patient lives in Madison County, Florida. Madison County has
reported 4 birds which tested positive for WNV. Madison County is
adjacent to Jefferson County, where WNV has been found in 5 birds and
in 1 horse.
Because of the increased activity of Eastern equine encephalitis and
the WNV activity, a medical alert that was issued last month for
Holmes, Washington and Jackson counties has been extended to include
Bay, Calhoun, Gulf, Franklin, Liberty, Gadsden, Wakulla, Leon,
Jefferson, Madison and Taylor counties.
A copy of the press release issued on 23 Jul 2001 by FDOH may be found

Hello Bruce,
I thought he came home yesterday...maybe not but that is what I thought.
Only way I know to grab him for info is to call him..or email him. :)
He is a good person a find human and Aviculture is very fortunate to have him
on our side....he has a wonderful way of dealing with people as well..
anyway, email probably would be your best bet...
